Mother's Day is a perfect time for fathers to show their wives just how special they are (although this should not be limited to just one day in May of course!) It is a great time to teach your children (if you have any) how to honour their mums as well. If your wife is pregnant with your first child, this Mother's Day is also a timely opportunity to start a yearly "make Mum feel super special" tradition.
Here are some ways Daddy can make Mummy feel extra-loved and cherished this Mother's Day:
1. Time is golden.
Make time to celebrate the aforementioned occasion. Some dads may tend to overlook it, so mark it on your calendar and start making plans for your celebration (it need not be fancy or expensive, more on this later). Other fathers may be unable to celebrate on the day itself, due to work-related matters or other reasons. In this case, choose another date or day to replace the actual Mother's Day.
Some ideas to make the celebration special:
- Take your wife out to her favourite restaurant, or watch a movie together (let her choose of course!).
- Reminisce together by visiting the place where you had your first kiss.
- Unwind together by going for a couples massage at the spa of her choice.
- Have a picnic in a nearby park.
- Watch a concert together at the Esplanade.
2. Personalize it!
Make her a personalized card. Yes, Hallmark has some pretty good cards already, but your wife will surely appreciate it more if you try making her a card yourself. You can try gathering different messages from people who are close to your wife, especially your own kids. Ask them to list their top 3 reasons why their Mum is "the best in the world" or get them to complete sentences like "Mum, I am so grateful to have you in my life because_______."
If your children are still young, you may want to let them make a few scribbles to "decorate" the card or, if they are capable, draw and color a picture of Mummy. Nothing beats the personal touch that you can give to a simple but well-thought of greeting card.
3. Mum's Day Off.
If your wife is usually tired out from juggling work and mummy duties (especially if you have a little baby at home), Mother's Day is also a great time to let her have "the day off." Volunteer to watch Baby (or the kids, whatever applies to you) for the whole day and give your wife the freedom (and money, if needed!) to do whatever she would like to do with the free time she has.
Some wives prefer going to places of solitude to "retreat" from the busyness of their lives. Others may want to have a date with their own mums, or chat with their girlfriends over a cup of coffee. Your wife may even want to try something new, like bungee jumping, or have a complete makeover by getting a new haircut and buying some new clothes.
Whatever the case may be, make sure you don't do or say anything to her to make her feel "guilty" for getting some "me time" this Mother's Day. Let her enjoy herself – all mums need time for themselves so that they can be better wives and mums!
Whatever you do this Mother's Day to make your wife feel special, don't forget that every day is an opportunity for you (and your kids) to show her how much you love and appreciate her. We mums need your affirmation every now and then – it helps us keep going and gives us that extra push to do our best to care for everyone in the family.
Happy Mother's Day!
